Suicide Squad: 10 Reasons It Will Save The DC Cinematic Universe

9. The New Joker

In probably the most talked about piece of news in the casting announcement, Jared Leto will be playing the Joker. Of course, the question of whether the character should be rebooted so soon after The Dark Knight is potent, with no one wanting to mar Heath Ledger's legacy, but as it stands it looks like Warner are going about it in the best way. There's only really two conceivable directions the film could take the character in given the effect of Ledger's performance; something akin to the Mark Hamill voiced version from The Animated Series, or an adaptation of the disturbing, faceless monster from the rebooted New 52. One is draped in nostalgia, while the other hauntingly new (and also generally haunting), meaning Suicide Squad will provide something thus far lacking in the DC universe; exciting new takes on icons. Older Batman was done in The Dark Knight Rises, while the changes Man Of Steel felt like they were only made for the sake of it. The potential with this new Joker, however, is massive. Oh, and for what it's worth, as a hot name with proven versatility, Leto is obviously one of the best choices for the role.
