Suicide Squad: 28 WTF Moments

19. The Joker

Whatever you were expecting from Jared Leto's performance as the Joker, there's a good chance it wasn't anything like this. We were led to believe that he was going to be a recognisable Joker from the comics, despite his new look, but the reality is that he played it like Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow cosplaying as the Joker.

There's just too much performance there, too much artifice, and you have to think that it all stems from the encouragement David Ayer gave to Leto to experiment and to channel whatever he wanted into the character. Possibly thanks to the apparently major cuts, the interpretation feels as unfocused and scatty as the rest of the film.

And while there is some promise that he might get better in a more focused film, he's just so weird and pointless here (literally, he has no impact on the main plot) that his appearance on screen is genuinely jarring.
