6. It's Like Guardians Of The Galaxy
Given that music played such an important part in the trailers, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the film goes heavy on the musical accompaniment, discussing how Ayer uses individual musical cues for his characters (as per The Daily Beast):
"Writer-director David Ayer (Harsh Times, End of Watch, Fury) goes full Scorsese pairing Harley’s introduction with Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” one of the film’s many exhaustive musical cues that mostly feel on the nose and quickly become tiresome – even if here, it kind of works. Later Ayer drops an Eminem classic into a montage and sets a fight scene in a moving elevator to K7’s even more classic classic, “Come Baby Come.”
It should equally come as no surprise that a lot of the reviews have mentioned Guardians Of The Galaxy as a parallel. Coming Soon say as much:
"Suicide Squad also has one of the best soundtracks in a long time, following in the steps of Guardians of the Galaxy in terms of song choices. Each song helps tell the story of the character it is paired with and sets the tone. “You Don’t Own Me” introduces Harley Quinn, “Fortunate Son” is played when we meet Killer Croc, It goes on and on from there. There are a few new songs as well including “Heathens” by twenty one pilots. There’s a good chance you may want to pick up this album after seeing the movie."
And USA Today took a similar lead:
"With shades of Guardians of the Galaxy and the original Ghostbusters, Suicide Squadtakes its ne'er-do-wells — led by the assassin Deadshot (Will Smith) and oddball bad girl Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) — from their Louisiana supermax home to battling a magical enemy. Alliances are formed, bonds are shaken, and the group is constantly on the edge of implosion."
Somewhat unforgivably, according to The Guardian, the film is missing both Ballroom Blitz and Bohemian Rhapsody, despite their importance in the trailers.
