Sundance Film Festival 2023: 20 Movies You Need To Know About
6. Flora & Son
John Carney's (Once, Sing Street) long-awaited first film in seven years may not quite reach the finest works of his career, but it's still another heartfelt, affecting character-driven musical dramedy from the filmmaker.
The Dublin-set film stars Eve Hewson as Flora, a single mother struggling to connect with her troublemaker son, and in a desperate attempt to bring passion into his life, brings home a discarded guitar from a skip while taking music lessons over Zoom from an LA-based guitar teacher, Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).
No points for guessing how the story unfolds, but Carney's film is so thoroughly dripping in charm and likeability that you'll probably not mind much.
As ever, Carney is obsessed with conveying the uniting potential of music, and the result is a feel-good crowd-pleaser that'll go down a treat when the general public finally gets their eyes on it.
Flora and Son will release on Apple TV+ later this year.
