Super Bowl 2020 Trailers: 10 Things We Learned

2. In Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise Faces Off Against The Son Of Goose

The Super Bowl ad for Top Gun: Maverick showed some eye-wateringly beautiful new in-cockpit footage of Tom Cruise's Maverick performing some death-defying airborne stunts, but also gave a slight hint at what the film's central dramatic conflict will be.

A voiceover from "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Goose who perished in the first film, confirms that he doesn't think much of Maverick, as Rooster tells him, "My dad believed in you. I'm not gonna make the same mistake."

Clearly, Rooster resents Maverick for his involvement in his father's death, though it remains to be seen whether or not Rooster will become a flat-out villain, or perhaps more likely, his arc will be one of forgiveness towards Maverick.

Either way, we're clearly going to see Rooster and Mav at odds for the majority of the sequel.
