20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
6. The Lodge
From its title onwards, The Lodge is primed to make the audience believe there just might be something supernatural about the titular locale in which a woman, Grace (Riley Keough), is stranded with her fiancé's two children over Christmas.
But for one, there's absolutely nothing supernatural about this film, and even when it becomes clear we're dealing with more of a psychological horror film about Grace's deteriorating mental state, nothing is quite as it seems.
Without entirely giving the game away, there's an absolutely unhinged third act reveal which significantly recontextualises everything Grace has gone through during the movie, effectively flipping the script on the entire central character dynamic.
If the marketing made The Lodge look like a well-made take on a familiar haunted cabin movie, it's far more of a sick puppy than that, all the way to its unrelentingly bleak finale. And we wouldn't have it any other way.
