20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
7. Resurrection
From outward appearances, Resurrection is simply a psychological horror film about a woman, Margaret (Rebecca Hall), who tries to regain control of her life after encountering an abusive ex, David (Tim Roth).
The trailers largely play-up the fiery intensity of the two-hander between Hall and Roth, without revealing the film's deeply twisted conceit.
Eventually it's revealed that, years earlier, Margaret gave birth to a son who vanished one day, with David claiming that he ate the boy, but that the boy is still alive inside his stomach. David continues to taunt Margaret over this in an attempt to control her.
Filmmaker Andrew Semans does a masterful job of teasing out the potent psychological horror from this scenario, leading up to a nauseating body horror finale that's, again, not what anyone could've possibly seen coming.
For anyone expecting a more familiar, down-the-line horror movie about trauma, this was ultimately an extremely heightened and materially strange rendition of it.
