20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected

13. Better Watch Out

Well Go USA

It can be great when a movie's marketing misleads the audience in order to conceal a shocking mid-film twist, and that's absolutely true of the seasonal horror classic Better Watch Out, which ended up giving viewers something even better than advertised.

If you took the trailers at face value, this was about a 12-year-old boy, Luke (Levi Miller), whose babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) fights to protect him following a vicious home invasion during Christmas.

But mid-way through the story, we learn that the attack was actually not what it seems, and without getting too far into spoiler territory, one apparently innocent party isn't quite as innocent as they look.

It's a brilliantly executed subversion of expectations that only further energises the film for the rest of its runtime, and filmmaker Chris Peckover stuck the landing so well that fans are still actively jonesing for a sequel almost an entire decade later.
