20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected

Now in fairness, if you were familiar with the prior work of director Jonathan Glazer you might've had a stronger inkling of what to expect from his sci-fi horror film Under the Skin.

But for the masses who were lured to the film by the promise of a sexy, murderous humanoid alien played by Scarlett Johansson, Glazer's film wasn't really that at all.

Basically, this has a lot less in common with 1995's trash classic Species than many expected, but even Glazer's fans probably didn't foresee quite where he would focus his lens.

This is less about an alien harvesting lonely men in Scotland than it is an alien experiencing the strangeness of the human experience - the rituals we all take for granted and yet which would seem completely, well, alien to an outsider.

It's masterfully wrought, though it's also easy to understand why casual-minded audiences expecting something a little more conventional bounced off it almost instantly.
