2. Emma's Confession - The Drama
The marketing for Kristoffer Borgli's new black comedy The Drama quite ingeniously hinged itself around a tantalising central mystery - what, exactly, did Emma (Zendaya drunkenly confess that threw her impending nuptials to Charlie (Robert Pattinson) into such a tailspin?
There had been rampant online speculation for months leading up to the film's release, but few were prepared for quite how dark Emma's revelation would go.
When Emma, Charlie, and two of their friends discuss the worst thing they've ever done, Emma reveals that she planned a school shooting as a lonely, depressed teenager, and only decided not to go through with it after another school shooting happened first, prompting her to become a gun control activist instead.
It's a genuinely shocking moment that sucks all the air out of the room and creates one hell of a dramatic powder keg, causing Emma and Charlie to spiral throughout the week leading up to their hot mess of a wedding.
Considering the obvious sensitivity of the subject matter, it's frankly shocking that any film, even one written and directed by a non-American, would dare go there - especially with two bonafide A-listers and the backing of A24.
Love it or hate it, though, The Drama is undeniably one of the year's most singular and unforgettable films so far.
