20 Recent Movies You Had NO IDEA Were Box Office Hits

7. Undertone

Undertone
A24

Undertone is a new sound-centric A24 horror film from rising filmmaker Ian Tuason, and the movie's early response from festivals was positive enough that Tuason was soon enough hired to direct the upcoming eighth Paranormal Activity film.

Undertone didn't make quite as much of a dent as your typical A24 horror, though, and with the general audience response proving sharply divided on release weekend, it seemed like a film destined to flame out commercially.

But Undertone had one big ace up its sleeve - it's a micro-budget horror film.

Tuason produced it for just $500,000, and so considering it grossed over $9 million in its opening weekend alone, it's already firmly in the black.

As such, anything else Undertone makes theatrically is just gravy at this point, as it's already a massive success relative to its budget, to say nothing of the extra revenue it'll take in once it hits streaming.
