Though video game adaptations are all the rage right now, even fans of surreal adventure game The Exit 8 might not know that the puzzle-based walking simulator was adapted into a Japanese film last year.

Hell, Exit 8 even had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, yet despite this and the original game being a viral indie hit, it didn't seem likely that Exit 8 could become a wider breakout success.

But Exit 8 ended up grossing just shy of $40 million, most of it from Japan, and while the film's budget hasn't ever been officially disclosed, considering its single-location setting and modest production, it was clearly just a fraction of this figure.

Better still, Neon is set to release the film in North America this April, where it'll likely add at least a few more million to its already tidy sum.

All in all, it's a remarkable outcome for a film even many fans of the game have no idea exists.
