Suspiria: Everything You Need To Know About The Three Mothers
4. Mother Lachrymarum
Of all three of the mothers, Mater Lachrymarum is the most strange.
Unlike the other two, Lachrymarum made her debut appearance in a cameo role. Rather than reserving her specifically for her own film, Argento had her make a brief but impactful appearance in Inferno. It wasn't until decades later that she got her own proper film, with Mother of Tears.
Her home is located in Rome, where she hibernates for decades at a time. This is due to her immense power, as she is said to be both the most beautiful and most powerful of the three. Whereas Mater Tenebrarum worked mostly alone and Mater Suspiriorum had a coven of roughly a dozen witches, Mater Lachrymarum has a gargantuan following of witches who act as her minions and do her bidding.
Her power is so immense that when she is awoken, she releases 'rampaging covens of glamorously decadent witches, waves of suicides and chaos in the streets'. While the other Mothers certainly had their power, Lachrymarum is the only one with enough power to singlehandedly start the apocalypse.
