Movies about alcoholics scrambling to repair their broken lives are nothing new, though Andrea Riseborough brings an uncommonly honest, unvarnished quality to this affecting drama.
To Leslie follows Riseborough's title character, a lottery winner who quickly burned through her winnings in a matter of years and today has little to show for it beyond a drinking problem.
Riseborough gives a remarkable performance as a woman trying to pull herself away from the cliff's edge, playing wonderfully opposite Marc Maron as a kindly motel manager trying to help her get back on her feet.
There aren't any grand plot twists or surprises, but the sheer empathy that radiates from the ensemble cast - also including Allison Janney and Andre Royo - keeps it compelling all the way to the finish.
