Taika Waititi's Films: Ranked From Worst To Best
3. Eagle Vs Shark (2007)
Waititi's debut feature is his strangest but most intimate film in his catalogue. The film also continually defies expectation, often to hilarious result (see Jemaine Clement beating up a man in a wheelchair, then losing the fight, in slow motion, for case and point).
Though it is at times a bit too twee, it doesn't feel as forced as some of the more emotional moments in Boy and Hunt For The Wilderpeople. It is also consistently funny, with rarely a scene passing by without an amusing throw-away line or incident occurring.
Some of the characters aren't as fully developed as in some of his later films, but when characters are this idiosyncratic and funny, who cares. Weird, hilarious, touching and totally unexpected; it deserves to be up there with some of the best indie comedies of all time like Clerks and Napoleon Dynamite.
