Terminator 6: Linda Hamilton WILL Be Back

On your feet, soldier.

Terminator reboots haven't worked out in the past, but the latest attempt at one could enjoy different fortunes now that series legend Linda Hamilton is on board.

The veteran actress has signed up to reprise her role as the kickass heroine Sarah Connor in Terminator 6, a part she hasn't played since 1991's contender for greatest sequel ever, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

She isn't the only series icon returning for the movie - Arnold Schwarzenegger will also be back once again, though at his age it's difficult to imagine him playing one of the titular killing machines, convincingly, at least.

After the misfires of Salvation and Genisys, it seemed like a good time for the franchise to call it a day, but since the rights to the property are on the way back to series mastermind James Cameron, the next sequel is a different proposition.

Cameron is heavily involved in T6 - how he found the time in between making all those Avatar sequels is anyone's guess - providing its story and overseeing the project as producer. Deadpool director Tim Miller is directing, which is good news for the fans who are hoping for an R rating and high body count.

Announcing Hamilton's involvement at a private event, Cameron is quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying...

“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return… There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

Schwarzenegger and Hamilton's characters will be joined by a new cast of younger actors in Terminator 6, which is being touted as the beginning of a new trilogy. Genisys, of course, launched with similar designs only for them to disintegrate when the box office figures and reviews came in, but given who's involved, T6 has a stronger chance of reigniting the series.

There are obvious comparisons to draw between Cameron's approach and Disney's strategy when it revived Star Wars - the series veterans are revisiting their classic roles alongside a new generation of heroes. Whether it turns out to be quite as successful as The Force Awakens remains to be seen, but this is an exciting new chapter for Terminator nonethless.

T6 is expected to enter production next year and hit cinemas in 2019 or 2020.
