The 10 Animated Classics Disney WON'T Remake In Live Action

2. Bambi

Bambi is Disney's most underrated movie. That's not to say it isn't appreciated, but that reverence of it never seems to go beyond the death of Bambi's mother, which is just one (admittedly defining) part of this joyous coming of age drama.

That should surely be a perfect reason to remake it - it's a well-known film that could still benefit from upped DVD sales and has a strong central story. Heck, the 1942 original's major selling point - the painterly recreation of the forest - is exactly what these new enterprises are going for.

Where it falls down is spectacle - you have the forest fire, yes, but as a whole movie its intimate, with the backdrop just that. This is one of Bambi's biggest strengths, but it might not transfer too well to the real world. You also have the human issue; obviously man is the film's primary antagonist, but it's a purposely unseen threat and unlike Maleficent, shifting focus is unlikely to work.

At the end of the day, the biggest thing working against Bambi is that the death overshadows everything else; nothing else commands iconic status. And given how good it is, perhaps it's just better to rewatch.
