10 Greatest Actors Alive (And Currently Working)
1. Michael Shannon
Probably the least famous actor to feature here, Michael Shannon is never going to be a household name. He’s too weird looking, too rough around the edges, too imposing, too intimidating. He stars in unusual films, sometimes only for a scene or two. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, he makes the cut (and then some).
Capable of stealing a film in which he has only three or four pretty minor scenes (see: Mud), Shannon is always the actor you remember most. It’s not hyperbole to suggest that he’s the best thing about every film he’s ever been in, and his performances in otherwise forgettable films such as Premium Rush or The Runaways are masterpieces in an actor elevating himself above his given material.
That’s not to say he can’t helm a film, though: his lead performances in William Friedkin’s Bug and Jeff Nichol’s Take Shelter are expert depiction of madness, and the former especially is a deeply unsettling piece of work. Moreover, Shannon has too ventured into the mainstream, starring as General Zod in Man of Steel, as well as appearing in all 5 seasons of Boardwalk Empire.
Look out for him playing Elvis Presley in the forthcoming Elvis & Nixon, which he's bound to absolutely own, mama.
See Him In: The Runaways: where he plays legendary cult music producer Kim Fowley, green hair and all.
