15 Greatest Horror Films Of The Decade (So Far)

5. Insidious

For the first half, Insidious is a pretty classic "haunted house" movie, and one of the most effective in that genre ever made. It's very reliant on jump scares, but they're some of the best in the genre's history.

Then the second half takes a complete turn that tends to divide audiences. While the first hour relied a lot on the fear of the unknown, the second half makes it all completely known, taking audiences into the spirit world. Some find this to be a little goofy, but if you can get on board with really exploring the supernatural, the last hour is still kind of brilliant in its own way.

Over the course of three films, the franchise has explored the spirit realm known as The Further, which is one of the coolest additions to the genre in a long time. It's sort of reminiscent of Freddy's dreamworld in the Nightmare on Elm Street films, and whenever the characters head out into the Further, it feels like anything can happen. It's like the cinematic equivalent of walking through a dimly lit haunted house and not knowing what lurks around the corner.

This is one of those horror films that's absolutely impossible to get out of your head. It's what nightmares are made of.
