6. Sinister

When the limitations of found footage became clear, Sinister came along to use that technique in a brand new way, offering some of the creepiest found footage ever but served up in small, more digestible doses.

Sinister revolves around a true crime writer who moves his family into a home where a bunch of people were murdered, which sounds like a great idea. He finds a bunch of film reels in the attic depicting a series of murders, and it appears that this might have been the work of a serial killer.

The film reels are definitely the most talked about part of the movie, and for good reason. They're downright terrifying with a haunting use of music, and what's great is that they aren't revealed all at once. Right away it's established how gruesome they are, so that builds such a sense of dread when it's time to watch another one. You can feel the sound of everyone in the audience holding their breath waiting for what's to come as soon as the film starts to roll.

Sinister also relies a lot on mystery, and figuring the whole thing out is pretty compelling, with the movie dealing out information at a nice, slow pace. By the time the sinister "Mr. Boogie" is revealed in the last act, it's totally worth the wait.
