15 Greatest Horror Films Of The Decade (So Far)
11. Oculus
A lot of people dismissed Oculus based on the silly sounding premise. Really, a movie about a haunted mirror? But those people are missing out on one of the coolest and most unique horror films in recent years.
Oculus takes place in two time periods, flashing back and forth between them. In the present, Tim is discharged from a mental hospital about a decade after his parents' deaths. He's believed to have killed them, but his sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan) tries to prove that he wasn't responsible: their deaths had something to do with a supernatural entity living inside an antique mirror.
So yes, it's a movie about a haunted mirror, but it's the best version of that story imaginable. Like the house in Grave Encounters, the strange force inside the mirror totally messes with the heads of these characters, able to make them see things that aren't real. In one great scene, Kaylie bites into what's clearly an apple, only to look down and see it's actually a lightbulb, and her mouth is now full of blood.
But then no, it really was an apple, and the entity was just messing with her head.
The movie is full of brilliant little gags like that which screw with our sense of reality, and the ending is absolutely killer. It's a truly underrated little horror film that deserves some more love.
