15 Greatest Horror Films Of The Decade (So Far)

10. Unfriended

The early part of this decade was defined by found footage, but there's only so much you can do with that genre. It was time to bring in something fresh, and Unfriended does that, hitting audiences where they live now: online.

Unfriended is about a group of friends hanging out over Skype when suddenly a mysterious new person enters the call. It soon becomes clear that this is somehow the account of their friend who died a year earlier.

The entire thing takes place over the main character's laptop, and the movie uses aspects of modern technology for its scares in some pretty inventive ways. One scene in particular capitalizes on the fact that video calls on Skype often freeze up for a few seconds. There's also a sequence involving Spotify playing on Blaire's computer which somehow becomes horrifying. This is a film that makes the Facebook notification sound and the spinning beach ball of death scary, and that's quite an achievement.

While many technology driven movies aren't very accurate, Unfriended understands how young adults use the Internet. Sometimes Blaire will type something and then go back and revise it, and without any dialogue, seeing her rephrase what she was going to say tells us a lot about her.

It might sound kind of silly, but for better or worse, Unfriended really is a defining horror film of this decade.
