15 Greatest Horror Films Of The Decade (So Far)
7. Evil Dead
Evil Dead is quite possibly the greatest horror remake of all time, and in a lot of ways it's actually better than the Sam Raimi version.
That might sound blasphemous, but while the original Evil Dead is a classic, even Raimi would admit it's pretty limited by its small budget. That's part of the charm, but it also means the movie was due for a retelling.
The remake doesn't simply redo the same film, though. It hits similar beats, still having the tree rape, a character cutting their arm off, a character being locked in the cellar, etc. But all of these moments happen in completely new and fresh ways, and it feels more like an alternate reality version of Evil Dead rather than just a simple do over.
Plus, director Fede Alvarez understands there's no replacement for Bruce Campbell, so instead the movie offers a totally new protagonist with Mia, one of the most badass female heroes in horror history. The film totally revels in its gore and is absolutely, relentlessly nasty. The ending is one of the most bloody finales ever, and "buckets of blood" doesn't even begin to describe it.
This remake is pretty scary at times, but more than that it's just a ton of fun, an absolutely glorious 90 minutes for any horror fan. It's still got nothing on Evil Dead II, though.
