1. There Are Multiple Roads To Take
The Amazing Spider-Man set up this narrative that was unlike anything Sam Raimi had previously done. It gave us a re-imagining of Peter Parker and his origin story into his alter ego Spider-Man. It gave us a rebalanced and detailed world full of possibilities and interactions, virtually reseting the universe that Raimi set up. In that reset, we have a refreshed path for Peter Parker to take. With the first film, we saw Peter become Spider Man, open up his relationship with Gwen Stacy, collide with Dr. Curt Conners (a member of OsCorp and employee of Norman Osborn, no less), and start his career as the superhero Spider-Man. As mentioned with Peter's journey, where I compared it to a chess game with a nearly endless amount of moves to make, it fits this final reasoning as well. As common knowledge would dictate, Spider-Man is an important part of the Marvel universe, with his path going down roads that are beyond comprehension and imagination. The story of a simple nerd who ended up getting bit by a radioactive spider and being granted superpowers to save New York City and world is a major component to Marvel's success in storytelling and personal in-depth narrative. So of course Spider-Man has been down many roads, not all shiny and bright, but every single one of them a piece of his history and a journey. So with TASM2, the second film in a four-film series, it grants us, the diehard Spider- Man fans, vast speculation as to what
might happen with Peter's journey and where it takes him after the film is said and done. Here is a list of possible (and dream-like) options:
1. The incorporation of the Sinister Six, which happens to be the most logical and likely scenario at this time. 2. A team-up with Wolverine. 3. The launch of the Venom storyline. 4. The Secret Wars, maybe?
And everyone's biggest and brightest hope: Spider-Man joining the Avengers. Now I know this subject has been talked about, debated, ranted on, picked apart, dissected, and torn asunder, but let's consider the road in which Peter Parker/Spider Man
does join the Marvel super team. What
if it were possible - not by the end of TASM2 but perhaps the third or fourth film? What
if, by common circumstance, Peter Parker was destined to be a part of the Avengers team this whole time, despite Sony owning the Spider-Man license and Marvel-Disney holding the Avengers? Think about it in this scenario: In the comics, Peter's parents were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. What if in the sequel, or in the later sequels, it is revealed that they were agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this whole time and were only looking out to protect Peter not just from whomever it was that was targeting the Parkers, but protecting him until it was time to be a part of something much bigger and broader? What if in TASM2 or in the later sequels Peter gets notified of this via ways of his parents sending him a message explaining to him what he was always meant to do? How about a hidden video over the computer that Peter some day discovers for himself, with his parents detailing everything? Like so:
"Peter, if you're watching this now, you're probably grown up and facing the world, just like the headstrong boy you once were. Your mother and I know you're still headstrong to this day, and we wish we could be there now to see you all grown up. We're sorry for abandoning you when you needed us most; chances are we took that regret to the grave. But we wanted you to know that we only did it to protect you from what we really were. We were government agents. True, I did do research on the genetics of animals, spiders mostly, but it was all for a purpose. To protect you when you were ready to face the truth. And to let you know the world needs protecting, too."
It may seem somewhat subliminal and wrapped-about, but it would seem a likely explanation as to the nature of Peter Parker/Spider Man joining the Avengers later on in the future. I can only imagine him swinging through the towering buildings of New York, only to land on what he thinks is a regular glass window, only to fly through it and into a dark room that was prepped to fight his spidey-sense. Peter doesn't know where he is, and asks what's going on, only to be greeted by none other than Nick Fury, confirming Peter's parents as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and setting in motion Peter's progression into the Avengers, and shaping his destiny just the way it was suppose to be. Now of course this is all purely speculation, but it's not too far outside the realm of possibility. As a fan and loyalist, I find it my duty to figure out puzzles such as the now-famous Spider-Man/Avengers team-up. And right now this seems the only likely option. But still, it's one of the numerous roads TASM2 can take or set up. So there we have it: 10 definitive reasons why TASM2 will be up to the expectations of the fans and critics. The hype is still very strong, and the wait grows shorter with each passing day. What do you guys think? Is there any other reason you believe will set the record straight? Or do you believe any one of these reasons will possibly kill the film and your enjoyment? Fell free to discuss the matter below in the comments.
