The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 8 Leftover Plot Points That Really Need Explaining

6. Is Peter Genetically Modified?

Spider One theory that has grown increasingly popular since the film's release is the notion that Peter may be genetically modified, which allowed his body to react the way it did when he was bit by the spider that changes his life forever. At the beginning of the film, we're shown that Richard Parker is doing some sort of research involving arachnids, as evidenced by the glass containing one in his office. Was Peter's transformation an accident, or a result of some sort of genetic tweaking? The early marketing for the film (a lot of which wound up on the cutting room floor) contained lines like "do you have any idea what you really are?" The specifics of the idea were never fully stated in the movie, but since it appears that the story will continue revolving around the genetics work being done at Oscorp, it's definitely a possibility.
