2. The "Untold Story"? Really?
When the reboot was first announced, you could literally hear people around world groaning "really? REALLY? The last one was, like, 3 years ago!". Clearly, while the final instalment in the Raimi franchise left a sour taste in everyone's mouth, people still felt that it was too soon to produce a reboot (a process that is typically only seen a decade-or-two following the creation of the original movie). However, when the first pieces of marketing came out, they all hinted at a story that would follow the "untold story" of Peter Parker's origin story. While many were still quite skeptical, there definitely an air of mystery surrounding the film, which promised a new, far more mature, take on the Spider-Man character. While it certainly (for the most part) delivered in that respect, the secrets behind Parker's past, the one that was used to get the film an audience, was never really developed. Since the film's release, the director has promised that " don't totally wrap up that story in this first movie. It's sort of an ongoing mystery". You mean the story that I thought would help rationalize my purchasing a ticket for the purpose of watching this thing? In the film, we are given small hints at the kind of life that Parker's parents lived, but otherwise, all clues pointing to something under the surface are put aside for more action. It's clear that this was merely a tool to convince audiences that seeing this new interpretation of the Spider-Man story was worth it (in some commercials, we hear Connors saying "if you want the truth, Peter, come and get it". A line that is, mysteriously, not in the final print), but it just never went anywhere, clearly being used as a set up for a new series of films so that the producers could punch a hole in our wallets. Nice.
