The Batman: 7 Challenges Matt Reeves Must Overcome
3. Breaking The DC Curse
Despite there being a huge gulf between critical and fan opinion on the matter, there’s still no denying that DC’s cinematic universe didn’t really have the best start. They’ve tried almost everything to breathe life into it including some ill-advised tonal changes that have left it feeling a bit disjointed and cobbled together.
Luckily, Batman hasn’t come out of it too badly yet with everyone agreeing that Affleck’s turn as the Dark Knight was just about the only salvageable thing from Dawn of Justice. Now everyone is holding their breath to see what Reeves can do with this (admittedly limited) head-start.
This is a huge amount of pressure for even someone with his calibre, especially due to the movie inhabiting a genre whose fans celebrate picking apart every tiny detail and second guessing every decision. This will also be a source of concern for Warner Bros. who are all too aware that while their movies are performing well at the box office, they’re getting panned critically.
If Reeves keeps his head down and ignores the maelstrom of forum rage likely to descend on every step of the project, audiences will be given a movie that does Batman justice and also nudges DC’s output back on the right track.
