Pretty quickly after Matt Reeves was hired to replace Ben Affleck, a rumour emerged that the director wanted to remove Affleck from The Batman entirely and that he already had a replacement lined up. That replacement turned out to be Jake Gyllenhaal who was previously in the running to play the Dark Knight in Batman Begins.

All legitimacy aside, Gyllenhaal would be a great choice. He's no longer the Donnie Darko guy and has grown his profile with roles of major depth, physicality and emotional range that would all help him play Batman and Bruce Wayne. He's also shown a particular ability with fractured characters and that's everything we'd need for a new Dark Knight.

Unfortunately for fans, Gyllenhaal has already kicked this rumour to the curb and his appearance in the MCU's Spider-Man: Far From Home seemingly kills it dead.
