The Batman Movie Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The Sequel Setup Will Divide Fans

The Batman
Warner Bros.

No spoilers here in the slightest, as it's no secret at all that Matt Reeves made this movie with the intent of setting up both a trilogy of Batman films and a wider universe incorporating spin-off TV shows for HBO Max.

The film ends at a point that clearly sets up the probable direction of the sequel, and it's a tease that's likely to divide Batman fans right down the middle.

For a film that bucks so many traditional notions of a Batman movie, it's a shame to see it hinting at more familiar concepts of Batman lore we've seen played out before for the sequel.

There's no guarantee Reeves will go in this direction of course, but a certain climactic scene which most pointedly hints at what we'll see in the next film does feel rather tacked on, almost as if mandated by the studio.

These issues aside, though, here's what The Batman gets so, so right...
