The Batman Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

6. Batman’s Evolution Is A Trip

The Batman Robert Pattinson
Warner Bros.

Remember that, "I'm vengeance" line from the trailers? That gave the impression that this would be Batman gone Rambo due to his traumatic childhood - that's not strictly the case. The character goes from striking fear into Gotham's criminal underbelly to being a much more well-rounded, justice-seeking machine.

The film doesn't reinvent the wheel, so to speak, but it does take film buffs on a fun ride. Besides, everyone knows what they're getting from this character by now, so experiencing Batman's evolution and Wayne's journey together is a fascinating trip.

Although it featured in the 'Downs', stick with the opening 30 minutes or so. You'll be rewarded for that.

There's more on the fleshed-out origin story later in this piece. For now, just know that seeing everyone's favourite caped crime-fighter evolve from a moping figure who struggles to relate with Gotham's population into a powerful force for good is great.
