The Batman Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

2. A Unique Origin Story?!

Take a bow, Matt Reeves and writer Peter Craig.

In fact, take a bow everybody who story-boarded The Batman from start to finish. This fan certainly didn't think there was any fresh ground to tread in this universe, but Matt Reeves and his team managed to find it. There's a uniqueness to the way they spin Bruce Wayne's yarn here that's so admirable.

Christopher Nolan received huge acclaim for the way he handled things with Batman Begins way back in 2005. Is this better? The temptation is to say yes, but there's some recency bias involved there too. That's hard to get away from, because Reeves' version is obviously the one swirling around this reviewer's head.

Anyone who expects a 'crash boom bang' action flick from beginning to end will be slightly disappointed. Those who stick with The Batman and demand a new nugget or two of inspiration from a well-told story will be anything but. How the hell did they manage to make "unique" and "Batman" go together in 2022?!
