The Blair Witch Project: 7 Most Compelling Fan Theories

6. Heather Was Secretly An Occultist Obsessed With The Witch Legend

This online theory is an interesting one: it works on the suggestion that Heather, utterly obsessed and consumed by the Elly Kedward legend, essentially summoned a dark presence in the woods, without the knowledge of Josh and Mike.

Funnily enough, this interpretation is backed up more by the elaborate marketing of the film than by what we see in the film itself. Myrick and Sanchez not only expanded on the lore of the Blair Witch legend (entirely invented for the purposes of the film) with their fictionalised companion documentary, but they also provided additional 'evidence' which was supposedly discovered alongside the footage, in the form of diary pages.

The film's official website features excerpts from this journal, which recount the project's production from Heather's perspective. She writes: "I can't explain the kinship I feel to her [...] I cannot see how she could avoid perceiving the energy I am sending her way, and have been for 2 years now."

This suggestion also provides us with a whole new way of interpreting that iconic, and rather snotty, message to home. Bearing this theory in mind, this scene can be read as a confessional from an occult fanatic who is in over her head, and only now realising what she's done. Addressing their families, she says "it is my fault": could this admission be more literal that we first assume?

To take things one step further, perhaps Heather knowingly took Josh and Mike with her under the guise of filming a documentary, with the intent of using them as some sort of sacrificial offering. Spooky stuff.
