The Cloverfield Paradox: 20 WTF Moments
13. The Mostly Pointless Michael Subplot
Alongside the central narrative taking place on the space station, there's a side-plot revolving around Michael, who is attempting to navigate the monster rampage back on Earth and find out what happened to his wife.
Though it at first seems like Michael is living through the events of the original Cloverfield movie - and the Super Bowl teaser trailer absolutely played up to this - this is ultimately seems to not be the case.
More to the point, he spends most of the movie doing rather benign, tedious activities, like driving around, talking on the phone and babysitting a distraught child.
It all adds incredibly little to the movie in terms of either the overarching Cloverfield mythology or even basic human intrigue, and as many fans have already commented, it reeks of something that was added in re-shoots.
Michael probably should've been an incidental character who appeared for a few scenes at the start of the movie to give Hamilton's story context, but instead he gets a baffling amount of screen time while actually doing incredibly little.
