1. Its Surprise Release Is A Total Game Changer

Make no mistake: this film will unquestionably be remembered for being stealth-released the second the Super Bowl finished rather than for anything that actually happened on-screen.

While some fans might be disappointed that the final product wasn't as exciting as the shock announcement itself, it's nevertheless an encouraging step forward for Netflix, especially in terms of acquiring mid-budget projects with clear talent behind them.

If the movie's viewing figures hit the numbers Netflix is hoping for, then the sky's the limit in terms of what they may attempt to pick up release in the future. Could we get more stealth releases like this? Could it even become a Super Bowl tradition to drop a new movie totally out of nowhere? One can dream.

Though Netflix's foray into cinema-caliber movies is still very much in its infancy, The Cloverfield Paradox will nevertheless be regarded as a game-changer of sorts, representing a potential turning point for the industry at large. Now Netflix just needs to ensure they fully capitalise on it.

Whatever you made of this film, what it says about the future of cinema and how we consume it is well worth celebrating. And no, cinemas aren't going anywhere, so don't worry about that.
