After the first two films were set in 1971 and 1977 respectively, The Devil Made Me Do It leaps forward to 1981 and so wears the hallmarks of the new decade on its sleeve.

Though hardly going full Stranger Things with an abundance of on-the-nose '80s references and cultural touchstones, there are a number of inspired nods to the era.

For starters, one of the film's subplots is centered around satanism and cults, reflecting the infamous satanic panic of the '80s, while there are numerous amusing needle-drops from the decade - most memorably, knowing use of Blondie's inimitable "Call Me."

Simply, it captures the mood of the time period without getting desperate or pandering about it, which is pretty refreshing.
