The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Totally Forgettable Villain

The first two Conjuring films did a fantastic job introducing villains who lodged themselves immediately in the viewers' subconscious - the original film had both possessed doll Annabelle and witch Bathsheba Sherman, while the sequel had demonic nun Valak and The Crooked Man.

However, the third film opts not to include such heightened, grotesque boss-type villains, with the ultimate antagonist proving far more ordinary and forgettable.

Without getting into spoilers, the means through which the primary antagonist emerges and how they're presented to the viewer feel like they could belong in any generic multiplex horror - the personality of the series' better villains is wholly missing here.

As tough as it must be to continually come up with new villains who can hold audiences in an icy grip, after five years of waiting for this movie, the paranormal antagonist isn't likely to linger long in viewers' minds.
