THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Trailer Has Robin Reference in Rogues Sign?
A fun true story is behind this but not one that proves Robin will be in The Dark Knight Rises... which he won't be.
Despite watching the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises about half a dozen times in the last few days, this reference totally passed me by. Eagle eyed Bat fans have spotted (and subsequently freaked out) that the 'Rogues' sign held by extras posing as fans at the Pittsburgh Heinz Field Stadium early in the trailer has a very recognizable R that is almost identical to the symbol for Batman's young sidekick Robin. Comic Book Movie have the Rogues poster banner and the Robin symbol above for comparison. It definitely looks more than a little similar right? Over the past 48 hours or so, some fans across the web have been freaking out over this 'R'. Some believe it proves The Boy Wonder will actually appear in the new Batman film and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's John Blake might end up as the character (though I don't see why it would mean that?) and the more realistic of folks just thought it was Christopher Nolan giving fans a fun nod to comic book lore and playing with them a little. In the end, according to Empire, it is mostly the latter. It turns out that during filming that day extras were asked to bring in their own props along with their costumes and when somebody brought in a Rogues banner (which was smart thinking by the way) they loved it and included it. The fan was a little mischievous and made the R to look like the Robin symbol and Nolan (or at least one of his crew members) probably spotted it but decided to include it anyway as a nod to the fans. The day this scene was shot, there were 10,000 extras there at Heinz Field. Most of them brought their own props and costumes, so clearly one guy has been smart and, when drawing the 'R' for the 'Rogues' signs (for the Rogues are Gotham's team), he's drawn it in the style of a Robin logo, off his own back. So this is no more a 'clue' that Robin will be in the film than the presence of the Batman logo on a door during Following was a 'clue' that Nolan would one day make a Batman movie.AICN then reported the guys name behind this idea... Brandon Di Luca... and the day of filming was August 6th, 2011. Harry Knowles knows this because he was emailed the image of the banner by Brandon when the ink was still drying the day before...
