13. Tonight's Entertainment
There are few performances in cinema as engaging as Heath Ledger's in The Dark Knight, and we get a good portion of careless violence and madness in this scene. With The Joker and his goons on the hunt for Harvey Dent, they burst into Bruce Wayne's lavish party with the intention to capture their prize, as the tension racks up. With the music beginning to crescendo, Wayne puts Dent in a sleeper hold and carries him into his bunker, while The Joker goes round the party interrogating the guests. His attention turns to Rachel Dawes, and in a truly chilling and shocking minute, he puts a knife to the woman's mouth, spinning the tale of his scars once again as the tension mounts, before Batman appears with a growl and the fighting begins.
12. It's all Over
Closing a trilogy of such class without dividing a few opinions was always going to be impossible for Nolan, but he does something here that truly sticks in the memory and manages to bring a fitting close to a magnificent saga. Once again, Nolan uses Hans Zimmer's soaring score along with some subdued and wonderful acting to bring incredible emotion. He also does something he has never shied away from in previous films, leaving it up to the viewer's to decide whether Bruce survived the bomb and was in fact happy in Paris with Selina. It's a satisfying and pleasing ending to a superb trilogy, powerful and emotional.
