The Dirt Review: 5 Ups & 7 Downs
2. The Voice-Overs Jar
You can see why the film opens with voice-overs from the band members, but they're immediately too jarring. It's a convention that can be quite bold, when it works, but here it comes off too much like Mike Myers' voice-overs in Wayne's World. Or a bad parody of them.
For some reason, there's a weird tweeness to the way the film uses the convention, which is clearly an attempt to bring the voice of the autobiography into focus more and also to establish more rapport with the characters. Sadly, it's just way too obvious how manipulative that attempt is and instead of building rapport, it becomes too obvious that we're watching performances.
The end shot of Nikki Sixx smirking to camera as he signs off the movie is also pretty awful. it's just all very dated.
