The Disaster Artist: 10 Biggest Book Omissions
8. Greg And Tommy's Shared Heritage
The film adaptation of The Disaster Artist runs with the theme that Greg Sestero and Tommy Wiseau are the same in the sense that they are both Hollywood outcasts who dream of being stars.
However, another way that Sestero and Wiseau are alike in real-life is their connection to the country of France. Greg Sestero's Mother is of French and Sicilian descent and Greg himself is fluent in the French language. Meanwhile, while Tommy Wiseau is still very secretive about his origins, he has admitted to have lived in France at one point in his life and also speaks French.
This is actually one of the first things Sestero noticed about Wiseau around the time they first met, as Wiseau was speaking to another member of their acting class (in French) about how France had won the 1998 World Cup.
Also, the real reason that Wiseau tackled Sestero in one of The Room's football-throwing scenes was not because they were arguing over Tommy's secrecy, but because Sestero was frustrated by Wiseau's inability to catch the football. After Sestero said "catch this" in French, an enraged Wiseau charged him, as he didn't want foreign languages in the movie, lest audiences discover he isn't actually American.
The shot of Wiseau tackling Sestero made it into the final cut of The Room.
