The Empire Strikes Back: 5 Things In The Original Script That Would Have Ruined The Movie

1. Luke & Leia Had A Love Scene

Kiss

If you thought Luke and Leia's incest-based kiss in The Empire Strikes Back was bad, just imagine what would have happened if their love scene had made the final cut. While the trio are on Hoth, there's no sexual tension between Han and Leia, and when Leia visits Luke in sick bay, we see them "in the midst of a tentative, and very tender love scene." Woah! Hold on, George. That's taking it a bit too far. Of course, Leia wasn't Luke's twin at this point, as earlier in the film Anakin had told Luke that his twin sister's name was actually Nellith (though Lucas had crossed out the name on the script and simply replaced it with the word "sister"). The Luke-Han-Leia love triangle was a much bigger element in the original drafts and is the root of Luke's decisions and conflict throughout the story. During the final lightsaber battle in Cloud City, Vader tells him, "You're in love with Leia. You don't want to lose her to Han Solo. But you will, if you lack the courage to use the strength that's in you. A strength as great as mine, Luke." Needless to say, we dodged a bullet there, and the saga as a whole benefited from the dropping of the love triangle. Han and Leia's relationship was allowed to grow, and Lucas replaced the love scene with a simple kiss (which he still insists isn't that weird). What do you think of these aspects of the original drafts? Would you have liked to see them in the script or are you glad they were changed? Let us know in the comments below.
