Both Slash Film and Collider agreed that though Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray did a solid job directing all the vehicular carnage, his skills weren't quite up there with the intense focus of previous franchise directors Justin Lin and James Wan.

Both made it clear that it's basically a minor criticism, but that the ingenious shot selections of the last three movies weren't quite so abundant, and it felt a little more workmanlike, probably because Gray has never worked on a project of this scale before.
