The Favourite Review: 8 Ups & 1 Down
3. Robbie Ryan's Gorgeous Cinematography
Having previously shot Andrea Arnold's beautiful 2011 adaptation of Wuthering Heights, cinematographer Robbie Ryan is no stranger to lensing immaculate period fare, and does a wonderful job making The Favourite look both stately and subversive.
Ryan's penchant for wide lenses captures as much of the opulent locales as possible, and though practically every frame of the film is meticulous enough to be hung on a wall, the occasional use of fish-eye lenses does a great job of furthering the film's off-kilter feel.
Though Alfonso CuarĂ³n probably has the Best Cinematography Oscar already sewn up for his eye-melting work on Roma, this is a deeply ravishing film in large part thanks to Ryan's expert eye for entrancing visuals.
