The Flash: 10 Reasons It's Awful
8. Keaton Feels Thrown In For Nostalgia Points
The biggest draw of this movie, for most, was seeing Michael Keaton return as Batman for the first time in 30 years. Who didn't get chills when he said his iconic line ("I'm Batman") in the trailer?
But unfortunately, Batman is under-served by the film in many ways. He does appear quite a bit and the film introduces him in an interesting state (he's now retired, as Gotham City has actually become very safe thanks to him) yet he also feels wasted at the same time.
The thing is, replace him with any other superhero and the film wouldn't change. Keaton Batman's doesn't influence Barry in his emotional journey or really teach him anything new; he mainly seems to be there to help move the plot along and he gets very little in the way of emotional depth either. He's just sort of there, and he gets a weightless death scene in the climax.
Additionally - and this is a bit of a hot take - as was the case with the character in the Burton movies, Keaton's Batman is a bit of a one-note bore who goes through the film with one facial expression and one tone of voice. Keaton is such a great actor, and it really feels like this part gives him little opportunity to truly show off his incredible range.
