The Flash: 10 Reasons It's Awful

4. The Messy And Contrived Screenplay

Even in a big, brash, and OTT superhero epic like this, good writing matters, and unfortunately, this is something The Flash often lacks.

To be fair to the film, it's a long way from the worst screenplay the DCEU has ever delivered, but it's also a long way from the best, and the film's script is filled with problems.

For example, as has been the case with a lot of recent superhero movies in recent times, the setup is painfully unconvincing. During an emotional moment, Barry runs at the speed of light and suddenly discovers that he can time-travel - how has he never discovered this before? Surely he's ran at the speed of light on other occasions?

This absence of logic and coherence continues throughout the film and an awful lot of things in it feel fairly dumb - another example is that, when in the reality containing Keaton's Batman, Barry gets his powers back in quite a silly way.

The film does try to give Barry an arc and there's a touching moment at the end with him and his mother, but Barry's character doesn't get enough focus and all too often, everything that's happening in the film only seems to be there to set up the next big set-piece.
