The Flash: 10 Reasons It's Awful

2. The Opening Set Piece Is Beyond Awful

Good lord.

So, how does this movie begin? Well, Barry is called in to help Batman (Ben Affleck) stop a robbery, and during this skirmish, a hospital begins collapsing and he has to save many newborn babies who are falling from the collapsing building. A literal baby shower, in other words.

On paper, this sequence doesn't sound too bad and definitely could've worked. In the final film, it's one of the worst superhero movie moments in recent memory.

This set piece features the film's rock-bottom special effects at their very worst, and the humour throughout - involving Barry catching a baby using a microwave and using the food in a falling vending machine to up his blood sugar levels - is cringe-inducing, and the whole thing is just so mind-meltingly stupid that watching it becomes genuinely painful.

Furthermore, the rest of the sequence is boring, badly shot, and ultra low-stakes, and it concludes with a groan-worthy gag where Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth makes Barry admit he's a virgin. It's the cherry on top of a terrible cake.
