The Gentlemen Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The Fantastic Editing & Pacing
Ritchie's rat-a-tat dialogue wouldn't really work were it not edited into shapely coherence by his regular editor James Herbert.
Given the fragmented nature of the narrative, which frequently juts back and forth between the past and present, the presentation could've easily turned messy, but Herbert ensures we always know where we are and what's going on - as much as Ritchie wants us to, anyway.
There's a pulsing energy to the various wordy monologues throughout the film, and the movie as a whole has a pacy clip to it which ensures its 113 minute runtime largely flies by.
Considering how this could've devolved into a busy, incoherent disaster in the editing room, Herbert deserves a lot of credit for keeping things on the right side of manic.
