The Girl In The Spider's Web Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs

2. It's Both Silly & Boring

The Girl in the Spider's Web commits the unfortunate dual sin of being both ridiculous and incredibly dull.

A daft film that knows it's daft can be a lot of fun, but with its generally self-serious tone and insistence that it's telling a masterfully gritty story, this movie just doesn't work.

The primary issue is that Lisbeth's hacking abilities have been amped up to near-superhuman levels this time, whereby she can effortlessly infiltrate any network she requires with the simple press of a button.

The result is that many sequences in the film feel contrived, perhaps none more than a scene in which she hacks a car from her phone within a matter of seconds.

Taking Lisbeth's highly proficient hacking skills from the previous movies and exaggerating them to cartoonish levels here detracts severely from the human vulnerability of the character. And it's not even dumb in a fun way, depressingly.
