The Hateful Eight New Trailer: 5 Easter Eggs You Probably Missed

5. The Countless Allusions To The Thing

No, that wasn't us trying to be vague and non-specific: we mean "The Thing," the classic John Carpenter horror movie from 1982 that also happens to feature Mr. Kurt Russell in a starring role. By the looks of things, Tarantino is keen to allude to the fact that a) Russell is in his movie and b) The Hateful Eight shares a lot of similarities with Carpenter's The Thing. Apart from their use of the always wonderful Kurt Russell, let us count the ways... First off, both pictures feature a remote, snowy setting that - through adverse weather conditions - traps its characters in a dangerous location against their wishes. Secondly, both feature plots about suspicious people suspecting other suspicious people of having ulterior motives - heck, Russell's John "The Hangman" Ruth even paraphrases a line from The Thing in the trailer when he glances around and declares that: "One of them fellas is not what he says he is." This is a play on J.R. MacReady's line "Somebody in this camp ain't what he appears to be" in The Thing, of course. And the icing of the cake? Well, both The Thing and The Hateful Eight feature original musical scores by none other than the legend that is composer Ennio Morricone.
