The Hateful Eight New Trailer: 5 Easter Eggs You Probably Missed

4. "Butterfield Overland Stage Co." & Stagecoach

In one particular shot, it's possible to make out the inscription "Butterfield Overland Stage Co." written in gold on the side of the stagecoach being used to transport John Ruth and his prisoner, the black-eyed Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh in a comeback role). Though many might assume that this is the name of a company that Tarantino made up, given his preference for such things, the Butterfield Overland Stage Co. was actually real. Best known as the "Butterfield Overland Mail Trail" during its most active years (1857 to 1861), it essentially acted as a sort of ol' time mail delivery and taxi service - that is, the point of the company was as a postal unit and as a stagecoach hire that people could use to travel between three states: Tennessee, Missouri and California. Tarantino has subtly tampered with history in order to get the company operating in Wyoming, apparently. The use of this company in the film - as made apparent by a certain shot in the trailer - is a clear homage to John Ford's classic movie Stagecoach, which stars John Wayne and is often thought to be one of the all-time great westerns (even though Tarantino hates John Ford). You can see the way Tarantino his mirrored an iconic shot from Stagecoach in his flick.
